This book is a must for anyone taking the PMP exam. It is really the only book you need.

2. A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge, Third Edition (PMBOK Guides) by Project Management Institute

Comments

This is the standard Project Management Guide by the Project Management Institute (www.pmi.org). If you are a member of PMI, you can get this for free online as a pdf document.

3. Advanced Project Portfolio Management and the PMO: Multiplying ROI at Warp Speed by Gerald I. Kendall

Comments

Even if you are just handling multiple projects at a department level, this is a good guide for how to establish Project Management office (PMO) guidelines, procedures and priorities.

4. PM FASTrack: PMP Exam Simulation Software, Version 5 by Rita Mulcahy

Comments

This is not a must have, but it does give you a good idea of what the exam will be like. Many of the questions are VERY similar to test questions.

5. Agile Software Development with SCRUM (Series in Agile Software Development) by Ken Schwaber

Comments

This is a good book on using SCRUM with software development. More and more I am beginning to think SCRUM techniques are better for software development than traditional project management. SCRUM is more flexible and seems to bring a higher level of customer satisfaction when compared to traditional approaches

6. Project Management: A Systems Approach to Planning, Scheduling, and Controlling by Harold, Ph.D. Kerzner

Comments

Many PMs love this book. It is great with for the basics of a systems approach, but it is not a book if you are looking an exam study guide. The PMP exam is more focused on a process type approach.

Some of the best project management books I have read thus far. The problem with books on project management is that so many focus on the PMP certification exam, and there are very few good books on actual professional development and strategies as a project manager.
