A tale of a boy's survival in the Canadian wilderness. Gripping read that especially seems to appeal to boys.

5. Kensuke's Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo

Another survival story, this time on an island where a shipwrecked boy befriends a Japanese man.

6. Princess Academy by Shannon Hale

A group of poor girls who live on a mountaintop are brought down to the valley to be schooled in the ways of being a princess. Much more than just a princess book.

7. Frindle by Andrew Clements

A must-read for elementary students. It's about the power of kids and how they can make change.

8. When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead

This award-winning book is all about time travel and is packed with surprises.

9. Love That Dog [Unabridged] by Sharon Creech

This novel is written entirely in poetic form, which is what makes it so beautiful. Very deep, thoughtful book about a boy losing his pet dog.

10. Hate That Cat: A Novel by Sharon Creech

The sequel to Love That Dog and just as powerful.

11. The Small Adventure of Popeye and Elvis by Barbara O'Connor

Comments

Great story of two boys that meet and share an adventure in the woods. Anything written by Barbara O'Connor is fabulous!
