2008 Books
1.
A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier
by Ishmael Beah
Comments
Very good read, it's incredible how these kids had to grow up.
2.
World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War
by Max Brooks
Comments
Started it in 2007, but finished in 2008 so I am counting it. :)
This book is told as a history of a war with zombies, it takes the topic seriously so if you are like me and love sci-fi and history books then this is an awesome mix.
3.
The Alchemist (Plus)
by Paulo Coelho
Comments
Interesting inspirational fable that is about as subtle as a shovel upside the head.
4.
No Country For Old Men
by Cormac McCarthy
Comments
A very well written and dark book about drug deals and killers in Texas.
5.
Niihau Incident
by Allan Beekman
Comments
Short and decent account of a Japanese fighter crash landing on this small Hawaiian Island and the strange events that followed.
6.
Savage Night
by Jim Thompson
Comments
Jim Thompson is one of those authors most people haven't heard of, but he is great. This novel is dark, filled with memorable characters, and has a great ending.
7.
The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference
by Malcolm Gladwell
Comments
Excellent read.
8.
Wuthering Heights (Penguin Classics)
by Emily Brontë
Comments
A classic I have been meaning to read for some time and I was not disappointed, although I was somewhat surprised as it wasn't the classic "love story" I expected (very dark and gothic)
Comments
I love this story and have read a couple other translations of Beowulf, but this was by far the most enjoyable.
12.
Raise a Smarter Child by Kindergarten: Raise IQ by up to 30 points and turn on your child's smart genes
by David Md Perlmutter
Comments
Disappointed, mostly about making sure baby gets correct nutrients and then some games to play. Mostly about all the stuff that can hurt your child, which is mostly obvious. Don't eat lead!
13.
Armageddon in Retrospect
by Kurt Vonnegut
Comments
While I love all of his books, I was disappointed that this was more older stories and not any new or recent essays. The stories are OK but definitely not his best.
14.
Rant: The Oral Biography of Buster Casey
by Chuck Palahniuk
Comments
Palahnuik's books have basically just become vehicles for his interesting and insane ideas but without the plot and purpose of his older novels.
15.
Big Fish (movie tie-in): A Novel of Mythic Proportions
by Daniel Wallace
Comments
I loved this book, very interesting approach.
16.
Flowers for Algernon
by Daniel Keyes
Comments
Even though the ending was spoiled long before I read it I still enjoyed the book, I am particularly impressed by the author sticking to it even though numerous publishers tried to get him to change it.
19.
The Picture of Dorian Gray (Oxford World's Classics)
by Oscar Wilde
Comments
A great read, very twisted. Drags on in a couple places but it's worth it.
