Ms. Dieter is Reading (2009-2010) . . .
1.
The Red Pyramid (The Kane Chronicles, Book 1)
by Rick Riordan
Comments
6/10 Loved this book (of course). Any readers of PERCY JACKSON series will enjoy this new series.
2.
The Girl Who Could Fly
by Victoria Forester
Comments
6/10 VIRGINIA READERS' CHOICE selection for 2010-2011. This book was quite a surprise to me. It started out seeming very ordinary and evolved into a strange sci-fi tale. Thoroughly enjoyed it and believe middle school readers will, too.
3.
My Mother the Cheerleader
by Robert Sharenow
Comments
5/10 VIRGINIA READERS' CHOICE book for 2010-2011. Fabulous historical fiction! Takes place in New Orleans when schools were being desegregated. The story follows Louise whose mother is a cheerleader - one of the women who stands outside the local elementary school and protests the black/white integration. Well-written and engagaging. FOR MATURE READERS ONLY - this book does contain racial language and some sexual content.
4.
Shift
by Jennifer Bradbury
Comments
5/10 VIRGINIA READERS' CHOICE BOOK 2010-2011. Thoroughly enjoyed this book. Read it cover-to-cover in one sitting it was so engaging. Younger readers may not be interested in it, but 8th graders and up should enjoy it. Two boys journey across country on their bikes, but one doesn't come home. The novel is really two stories in one: the story of their journey, and the story of what happens to Win.
5.
The 39 Clues: Book 8
by Gordan Korman
Comments
5/10 Great read; fans of the series will enjoy this one. True to the characters as well.
6.
I Am Scout: The Biography of Harper Lee
by Charles J. Shields
Comments
4/10 Those who have read TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD (and enjoyed it) will love this look into Harper Lee's life. Until I read this, I didn't realize how much of MOCKINGBIRD was autobiographical. (This book is the young adult version of MOCKINGBIRD: A BIOGRAPHY OF HARPER LEE).
** This book is on the 2010-2011 Virginia Readers' Choice list for middle school.
7.
Just in Case
by Meg Rosoff
Comments
4/10 Interesting read for more mature readers. David Case, who changes his name to Justin (Just-in Case)feels that Fate is hunting him down to do him and those around him harm. He does everything possible to avoid Fate, but sadly cannot.
8.
The 39 Clues Book 7: The Viper's Nest
by Peter Lerangis
Comments
4/10 Another solid turn in this cool adventure series. All middle school readers should enjoy these books.
9.
Going Bovine
by Libba Bray
Comments
4/10 Loved this book - but definitely for very mature readers. The main character has been diagnosed with the human form of mad cow disease (Creutzfeld-Jacobs). As he deteriorates into madness, he goes on a wild mental journal exploring some out of this world experiences.
10.
Dairy Queen
by Catherine Murdock
Comments
3/10 Loved it, loved it, loved it. Football, romance, and cows - what more do you need? DJ's family is about two things - dairy farming and football. When a family friend sends the rival football teams quarterback to the farm to work and train, DJ ends up as his coach. Can't say more b/c you need to read the book. While it is presented more as a "girl" book, there's a lot here for guys to enjoy as well.
11.
The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian
by Sherman Alexie
Comments
3/10 Wow! What an awesome book! Junior is a full-blood Indian living on a reservation and attending the underfunded local school. He decides to transfer to the "rich, white school" in the next town. This opens up all sorts of racial tension for him, but in a surprising place - on his own reservation. Funny and endearing. For mature readers.
12.
The Sorceress (The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel)
by Michael Scott
Comments
3/10 3rd book in THE SECRETS OF THE IMMORTAL NICHOLAS FLAMEL series. Action packed and well-thought out. Really enjoying this series. Will say that a few of the new characters seem like odd choices and the absence of Scatty throughout most of the book took away from it for me. Ppl who enjoy PERCY JACKSON and HARRY POTTER will like this series.
13.
The Magician (The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel)
by Michael Scott
Comments
3/10 2nd book in THE SECRETS OF THE IMMORTAL NICHOLAS FLAMEL series. Action packed and well-thought out. Really enjoying this series. Ppl who enjoy PERCY JACKSON and HARRY POTTER will like this series.
14.
95 Pounds of Hope
by Anna Gavalda
Comments
3/10 Started out with promise (no pun intended b/c of title), but kind of fizzled for me. While it is a quick, easy read, there wasn't much of a plot to keep me interested.
15.
The Alchemyst: The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel
by Michael Scott
Comments
3/10 The first in the Nicholas Flamel series. Twins find themselves caught up in the world of Nicholas Flamel, a man who has lived for hundreds of years in order to protect a book of magic. The book is stolen, and the twins find that their lives and abilities are tied to the future of the world.
16.
Lily Dale: Awakening (The Lily Dale Series)
by Wendy Corsi Staub
Comments
3/10 Cool start to a series dealing w/the supernatural. Lily spends the summer with her grandmother in a small community of psychics after her mother dies in a horrible accident. Lily discovers that psychic ability runs in her family and that she can speak to the dead.
17.
Roar
by Emma Clayton
Comments
3/10 Awesome new book in the dystopian genre. Reminds me a bit of ENDER'S GAME and INVITATION TO THE GAME, and of course the X-Men movies. In a futuristic society, mutant children are being manipulated and used for some evil purpose. The story follows twins as they are separated from their family and each other and forced to compete/train for the men in power.
BOB book for 2010-2011
18.
When You Reach Me
by Rebecca Stead
Comments
2/10 The 2010 Newberry Award Winner! Thoroughly enjoyed this book - quick read, too. The main character is dealing with everyday issues, including friends, school, family, but then there's an added "supernatural" element as well. Very cool.
19.
Viola in Reel Life
by Adriana Trigiani
Comments
1/10 - Trigiani's first book for young adults. I enjoyed the story as the main character matures and grows in a new environment in a midwest boarding school. While not action packed, it did keep my attention.
20.
The Fat Boy Chronicles

Comments
1/10 Really enjoyed this journal style book. Jimmy is obese and constantly tortured by the kids at his school. He figures out how to make it all work for him and get his life back on track.
21.
Leviathan
by Scott Westerfeld
Comments
1/10 Steampunk! Scott Westerfeld's newest series - very different from his other books. This is a bit of a heavier read, but quite interesting. Nobody creates "other worlds" better than Westerfeld.
22.

27.
Edward's Eyes
by Patricia MacLachlan
Comments
11/09 What a wonderfully told, but sad story! Jake tells the story of his family and little brother Edward. I can't say much without giving it away, but it is a great story :o)
28.
The 39 Clues Book 5: The Black Circle
by Patrick Carman
Comments
11/09 I've enjoyed this series so far, but I did not like this one quite as much. The characters didn't seem to flow from the last one. That said, the story was good, and it must be read to get to Book 6!
29.
Tentacles
by Roland Smith
Comments
11/09 (Sequel to CRYPTID HUNTERS) The action continues at full speed. Wolfe and his partner are on the search for a giant squid with the help of Marty and Grace. In the meantime, Noah Blackwood is trying to steal the dinosaur eggs, kidnap Grace, and stop the hunt for the squid. WARNING: the end leaves us hanging, so book 3 must be coming soon :o)
30.
Cryptid Hunters
by Roland Smith
Comments
11/09 Love Roland Smith's action books - he pulls you in right off the bat and keeps the action coming. Grace and Marty go to live with their uncle after their partents disappear. Uncle Wolfe researches cryptids (creatures believed to exist but have not been found). The two kids end up in the Congo through a mix-up and try to help their uncle beat his nemesis to find a live dinosaur egg.
31.
The Dying Breath: Forensic Mystery
by Alane Ferguson
Comments
11/09 I had trouble getting into this one at first, but it picked up fairly quickly. This continues where CIRCLE OF BLOOD left off, so readers may want to review the plot of that one before tackling this next book.
32.

Comments
11/09 The action continues as Amy and Dan search for the next set of clues in Egypt. Looking forward to book 5. (Suitable for all MS grades).

Comments
11/09 (Virginia Readers' Choice selection) Really enjoyed this one. Zoe Elias wants to play the piano, but instead, her father buys her an organ. Nothing is quite right in her life, but she finds a way to make it all work out.
34.
Ghost In The Machine (Skeleton Creek)
by Patrick Carman
Comments
10-09 (sequel to Skeleton Creek) Enjoyed both books, but this one is better. The reader reads the journal and periodically goes on line to watch a video clip that parallels the action in the book. The videos are much more intense and creepy in the 2nd novel. Great scary book selection for all levels.
35.
